Tonkawa Council of Elders
Respect Native American Traditions
The Tonkawa Council of Elders was founded in 1974 by a consortium of American Indian individuals, many of whom were tribal seniors. At that time, they were employed by the San Diego Indian Center located downtown, on Fifth and Cedar. This organization and services no longer exist. Tonkawa Council of Elders is the traditional rock of Native American wisdom for the new millinium.
Our Purpose:
The purpose of the Tonkawa Council of Elders Development Project is to improve the quality of life for American Indian Elders. Our major focus is community development.
Our goal is to provide the resources to assist all American Indian elders in a respectful, traditional manner.
To improve the quality of life for American Indian Elders we will inform and facilitate their access to services that will maintain them in their homes, as respected members of their communities and as keepers of our tribal custom and traditions.

TONKAWA MIGHTY MINUTES
April 13, 2014 1-3pm

Notice of our beloved elder Jane Dumas produced a lively discussion. She is in a hospice situation at Chaparral Rose 13653 Cuesta del Sol, Lakeside, 92040. 619-443-0019 call for directions. Also under consideration was recent and other members experience with Cruise ships illnesses. Most members voted to resume membership dues. Financial situation still needs to be finalized and report submitted. Also discussed were past pow wows and upcoming activities around San Diego and institutions of higher education. Attending today was: Rita, Jerry and his assistant Rachel, Vickie Gambala, Jean, Nellie, El Bisara, Ben, Roy, Juan del Rio, Barbra Schamek, Dennis Charette, Dina Brandon and Celia with Manuel Flores

This day our blessing was by Dennis Charette. His prayer called upon Tunkashila and went out to benefit the members and their families, those who could benefit from prayers, those under stress or illness.

Pow wow news included: the Mother’s Day Balboa park update. Also the Father’s day IB pow wow and the August CV pow wow on the Bay. We are always pleased to see our long time greeter Nellie Ruiz who was again picked up by Jean Vigenault so she could attend this month. (For more see the link below.)

Tonkawa luncheon selections were most appropriate to the season and appetites in cloudy, sunny brisk weather, were all very tasty and healthy choices that added to the opportunity of community. There was chicken cacciatore and new bean with hamburger good hearty stews main dishes. Many excellent salads and fruit. Also canned soda pop to wash down the donuts and Dudley’s apple bars. It is a fine day when we can again gather together in fellowship and feast and enjoy each others’ life experiences in good company.

Everyone is welcome maybe we will see you next month!
