TONKAWA San Diego Elders Club

September 14, 2008 TONKAWA minutes:

Our faithful TONKAWA members: Nellie Ruiz, Helen Halling, Mary Lou Finley, Paul Razo come early and review the past activities and meetings of our American Indian community. This Sunday no one was surprised to see every thing already set up for the meeting. TONKAWA members kept glancing toward the door to see who would walk in next.

Welcome surprise is our blessing by pop-in guest Dennis Alto along with his two grand children. Dennis has hosted regular purification gatherings for years. We are always happy to see new faces come to our TONKAWA meetings.

Vickie Gambala, TONKAWA Treasurer, reported on her participation with the soaring eagle dance and regalia classes. She also expressed he appreciation for the assistance of the TONKAWA club in financial matters concerning the Jump Start back to school backpack night.

El Biserra reported on the progress and finalized plans for the 'It's Your Life,' Student Conference 9/28/08 at the Handelry Hotel. All TONKAWA members and guests are welcome to attend the evening entertainment!

TONKAWA President Violet introduced Derek and reported on the success of her grant writing efforts and the Saturday October 4, 2008 TONKAWA picnic. It will be in Mission Bay Park on Hospitality point close to parking and the restrooms. Entertainment and fun activities are assigned along with prizes and raffles. Pollo and carne asada plates are on the menu along with hotdogs drinks, watermelon and many other goodies. This is a TONKAWA and community event we will all have a safe healthy fun time!

Our terrific TONKAWA members continue to keep happy smiles and real good eats in this potluck meal: fried chicken, potatoes and meat in a yummy brown gravy sauce, corn chips- yellow and blue with a wide selection of dips, onion, guacamole, salsa, seafood salad and potato salad along with dill pickles and olives go down real easy. Along with soda pop sugared and diet and plenty of Hot TONKAWA coffee brewing to wash it all down.

We cleaned up and some TONKAWA members were out the door by 1pm to other activities on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. Finally, there is hope for life- Football is in season!

Maybe we will see you and a friend (We are always recruiting Elders to be TONKWA members!). It is always nice to see new members and guests drop in and are encouraged to return. This is a real nice down home meeting to attend. We are also very pleased to enjoy the regular attendance of TONKAWA along with community guests and family members.

Respectfully submitted:
Roy Cook, TONKAWA secretary
