Tonkawa Council of Elders
Respect Native American Traditions
The Tonkawa Council of Elders was founded in 1974 by a consortium of American Indian individuals, many of whom were tribal seniors. At that time, they were employed by the San Diego Indian Center located downtown, on Fifth and Cedar. This organization and services no longer exist. Tonkawa Council of Elders is the traditional rock of Native American wisdom for the new millinium.
Our Purpose:
The purpose of the Tonkawa Council of Elders Development Project is to improve the quality of life for American Indian Elders. Our major focus is community development.
Our goal is to provide the resources to assist all American Indian elders in a respectful, traditional manner.
To improve the quality of life for American Indian Elders we will inform and facilitate their access to services that will maintain them in their homes, as respected members of their communities and as keepers of our tribal custom and traditions.

TONKAWA San Diego Elders Club

April 10, 2010 TONKAWA minutes:

This Sunday is windy and unpredictable weather. We just had a good room of faithful TONKAWA members in attendance this Sunday. Early arrivals this Sunday are TONKAWA Vice President Jerry Starnes and Rita. Jerry and Roy set up the room and Rita covered the tables with tablecloths.

TONKAWA Vice-President, Jerry Starnes, enrolled Menominee Tribe, chaired the meeting and Ruth Cervantes offered the blessing for the luncheon. We had a good TONKAWA response to a round robin introduction and review of the last month events in each member’s life. We might make this a part of future TONKAWA meetings.

1. Jean Vineault, TONKAWA treasurer, reported with a written copy for all the members and comments on the line items. It is M/S/P as presented. The discussion moved into related areas of concern and future planning for the TONKAWA seniors club:

2. TONKAWA Dues will remain the same $5, year and will be collected this August in conjunction with a mailed invitation to the next, Aug or Oct., hosted TONKAWA dinner or luncheon.

3. Celia Flores will secure an 8-foot banner identifying the TONKAWA group at public functions.

4. This May 11, 10, TONKAWA meeting will be at the IHRC Culture days pow wow in Balboa Park. We will request from IHRC, a covered shade and 12-14 chairs for the TONKAWA members.

5. Transportation for TONKAWA events and meetings was initiated and will be brought up in further discussions.

6. We will send out a mailed print copy of the TONKAWA minutes to the few members that do not have Email access.

The attending TONKAWA members and the tables looked festive and fine. We sat down to a heartfelt healthy potluck feast of ham and lima beans, Teriyaki chicken thighs, spicy chili beans, corn bread, rice and kidney beans in a red sauce, pan dulce, fresh bread and butter and type 2 special selection of donuts, bear claws maple and chocolate long johns.. Finally, there is good TONKAWA hot coffee.

We cleaned up, packed up and while some TONKAWA members were still packing ‘take-home snacks’, drinking coffee, talking and laughing, others went out the door by 1:45 pm.

It is always nice to see new members and guests drop in and are encouraged to return. This is a very nice down home meeting to attend. We are also very pleased to enjoy the regular attendance of TONKAWA along with community guests and family members.

The next TONKAWA meeting is May 11, 2010.
